Fireflies or Lightning Bugs?

Whatever you choose to call them their first sighting on an early evening signifies the beginning of Summer to me.

While at Market, on Saturday morning, I saw my first lightning bug. It didn't make much of an impact what with it being daylight and all.

I've been keeping vigil for the last few weeks waiting for the first arrivals and Sunday evening my patience paid off.

First there were a few flashing lights and I was excited. After first dark passed the show began and I was giddy.

What signifies the beginning of Summer to you? The smell of just cut grass, that first ripe tomato, fresh picked green beans from the garden??

Bug bites! No waxing poetic here. Just plain ole scratchmeitchme bug bites! :o)

A big pitcher of sweetened iced tea, and sandwiches for lunch, because it's just too hot to cook in the kitchen!

This year, first time ever, I saw fireflies lightening bugs at the end of MAY. Usually, it's June.

Now Angela I know better. Give me a better answer!

Rowena - Yep hot is definitely Summer. Particularly the last few years where we've had a five minute Spring then a crazy hot Summer!

Sandra - I thought it was getting pretty late for my first sightings too. Maybe our wet Spring had something to do with it?

I live in Seattle and had never traveled to an area with fireflies until I traveled across the US by vehicle (alone) to NC... while there in late June, it was hot and I sat out on the back porch while my cousin took a shower. I was astonished to see what looked like Christmas lights winking at me in the darkness on their 100 acre, 100 year old homestead at the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is something I'll never forget... wish we had them here... my cousin said she hasn't looked at them the same since seeing my delight! Thanks for bringing back the memories!
